Question

atoms are neutral. explain

Open in App
Solution

Atom is made up of three sub-atomic particles. These are protons , electrons and neutrons .

Protons and neutrons reside in the nucleus of an atom whereas electrons revolve in the shells around the nucleus. The protons and neutrons are collectively known as nucleons. Neutrons are neutral in nature i.e., they do not have any charge on them. Protons are positively charged whereas electrons are negatively charged. The number of electrons in the atoms are equal to the number of protons. Eventually, the net positive and negative charge get cancelled out and therefore an atom is neutral in nature.
