Question

balance the equation in descriptive method :-

sodium + water ----> sodium hydroxide + hydrogen

Open in App
Solution

Descriptive method of the reaction is given as under:-

Na + H2O --------> NaOH + H2

Step1) Number of hydrogens on the left hand side is two while on the right hand side it is three so, after multiplying H2O by two and also right hand side of NaOH by two we get equal number of hydrogens on both the sides.

Now reaction becomes as

Na +2 H2O --------> 2 NaOH + H2

Step2) Now number of sodium atom on the left side is one while on the right side it is two so multiply Na atom of left side by 2.

Reaction becomes

2 Na +2 H2O --------> 2 NaOH + H2

While number of oxygen atoms on both the sides are equal.

Hope you got it!
