Gas made from the anaerobic digestion of agricultural and animal waste is called biogas. When this biomass (agriculture and animal waste) is decomposed in the absence of oxygen, it releases biogas.
Following is the composition of biogas:
Methane: 50% to 75%
Carbon dioxide: 25% to50%
Nitrogen: less than 10%
Hydrogen: less than 1%
Hydrogen disulphide: less than 3%
It is an excellent fuel because:
1-Biogas provides a non-polluting and renewable source of energy.
2-Biogas is a clean fuel and has high calorific value. It is used for cooking, lighting of lamps, generating electricity, etc. Also the product left after degradation could be used as
manure for fields.
