Bleaching powder releases chlorine which is a very popular disinfectant that kills germs and other harmful bacteria present in water.
2CaOCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂ â†’ CaCO₃ + CaCl₂ + 2HClO
HClO â†’ HCl + [O]
2HCl + [O] â†’ H₂O + Cl₂.
This liberated chlorine acts as disinfectant, which kills harmful organism in water.
