burning the coal yields energy , but if we try to eat coal we will not get any energy. why?

Humans can release energy only from substances that are either carbohydrates, proteins or fats. These are broken down into simpler substances by a series of enzymes. Human beings do not have capacity to release energy from coal as they do have the enzymes for it. Therefore, humans cannot use coal as a source of energy.
