Question

cal the work done or the energy stored in a electric dipole in bringing it from infinity to an electric field.

Solution

Let an electric dipole having charge +q and -q seperated at distance d
now the potential energy of the system is
Up = kq2/d
now the work done in bringning from infinity to a point let origin is
W = change in potential energy of the system
W = - (U- Up )
W =  - U + Up ( U = 0)
W = -0 +  Up
W =  Up = kq2/d
hence the potential energy of the system depend upon charge and distance between the charges
