Question

Calculate molar concentrtion and percentage concentration of 12 N HCl (hydrochloric acid) solution. d=1.2 g/mL

Open in App
Solution

HCl contains only one hydrogen atom. So, its normality and molarity are same.

Therefore, molar concentration of 12N HCl = 12 M

Now,
Molar mass of HCl = 1 + 35.5 = 36.5 g/mol
Mass of 12 moles of HCl = 12 × 36.5 = 438 g
Mass of 1 L solution = Density in g/ml ×1000 mL
= 1.2 g/mL × 1000 ml = 1200 g
Percentage concentration = (mass of solute/ mass of solution ) x 100%
= (438/ 1200 ) x 100 %
= 36.5 %
