Question

Calculate molarity, molality and mole fraction of potassium iodide if the density of 20% (mass/mass) aqueous potassium iodide is 1.202 grams/litre.

Open in App
Solution

Molarity of the solution can be calculated as:

M = (%w x d x 10) / MM2.

where, %w = 20

d = 1.202 g/L

MM2 = Molar mass of KOH

Molality can be calculated using the following formula:

m = (M x 1000) / [(1000 x d) - (M x MM2)]

where, M = Molality

Mole fraction of aqueous solution of KOH can be calculated as:

x2 = (m * M1)/[(m * M1) + 100]

where, M1 = Molar mass of solvent = 18 g/mol
