Question

Calculate the percentage of nitrogen in ammonium nitrate.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Percentage of nitrogen in ammonium nitrate can be determined as follow:

Molecular mass of ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3) = 14g + 4×1g + 14g + 3×16g = 80g

So in 80 g of NH4NO3, mass of nitrogen is = 14 +14 = 28g

So in 1 g of NH4NO3, mass of nitrogen is = 28/80

In 100 g of NH4NO3, mass of nitrogen is = 28×100/80 = 35%

So percentage of nitrogen in ammonium nitrate is 35%.
