Question

can a carbon form four bonds with a single carbon atom (i.e) c2?if not why?

Open in App
Solution

Hi,

The carbon atom has four valence electrons. It needs four more electrons to obtain noble gas configuration. If carbon atom bonds with another carbon atom, then it has to share the electrons forming four bonds, which is not possible.

Hence, carbon cannot form bond with other carbon atom.

Hope this answers your question.

Best Wishes!
