Question

Can electric field at a point be zero, while electric potential is not zero? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Yes it is possible.

Consider two identical point charges. Then the electric field mid-way from the charges is zero but potential is not.

Since, electric field is a VECTOR quantity therefore, it will cancel out at the mid-point and hence zero.Whereas potential being a SCALAR quantity will add up due to the nature of the charges being the same.
