Question

can the caloriemeter be made by us at home may it be of any kind ?

Solution

A crude calorimeter can very much be made at home by using simple materials like plastic foam cups, metal cans etc that we use in daily life. However, an important point to note here is that a homemade calorimeter will not be as sensitive and accurate as a a bomb calorimeter that is used in laboratories. Hence the results for any experiment performed using a crude calorimeter will have high percentage error. It can be made using a plastic foam cup (also called coffee cup). Arrange for a cup lid so that it perfectly fits the mouth of the cup and is neither to large nor too small. Cut a small hole in the lid, large enough for the thermometer to pass through it. Push the thermometer through the lid into the cup so that it touches the base of the cup. The coffee cup calorimeter is now ready to use. To use it, you can simply remove the lid of the cup, add chemicals and measure the changes in the temperature.

Another important point to note is that a coffee cup calorimeter can't be used for high temperature reactions, since these would melt the cup.
