Question

CaO and NaCl have the same crystal structure and nearly the same ionic radii. If 'u' is the lattice energy of NaCl,then what is the lattice energy of CaO?

Open in App
Solution

In calculation of lattice energy , the charges on anion is very important parameter and it comes in multiplication term.
So in NaCl the charges are +1 and -1. The product value of the charges is 1.
But in CaO the charges are +2 and -2. The product value is 4. So the lattice energy of CaO would be 4 times of NaCl with same data.
