Solution

Let x be the number of adults and y be the number of children.

Then according to given situation,

4.50x + 1.50y = 600

⇒ 3x + y = 400

⇒ y = 400 – 3x ...(1)

Checking all options one by one:

(a) 90, 70

So, Put x = 90 in (1), we get y = 400 – 3 (90) = 130 ≠ 70

(b) 100, 60

Put x = 100 in (1), we get y = 400 – 3(100) = 100 ≠ 60

(c) 110, 50

Put x = 110 in (1), we get y = 400 – 3(110) = 70 ≠ 50

(d) 120, 40

Put x = 120 in (1), we get y = 400 – 3(120) = 40

∴ (120, 40) satisfies (1)

∴ Number of adults = 120 and number of children = 40.
