Question

Chlorine is prepared in the lab by treating with MnO2 with aqueous HCl

How many grams of HCl reacts with 5g of MnO2?

Open in App
Solution

Reaction is
4HCl + MnO2 2H2O + MnCl2 + Cl2

amount of HCl = 4
×36.5=146g
amount of MnO2 = 1
×87= 87g
where 36.5g is molar mass of HCl
and 87 g is molar mass of MnO2.
According to reaction:

146 g of HCl react with 87 g of MnO2
let x g of HCl is required to react with 5 g of MnO2 to form MnCl2 and Cl2.
so using unitary method to calculate the amount of HCl

x = 5×14687

x= 8.391 g

therefore, 8.391 g of HCl will react with 5g of MnO2.
