Question

Qno 5 Methane goes through combustion by comsuming Oxygen through the formula

CH4 + 2O2 ------>CO2 + 2H2 O

If inputs are CH4 =1kg O2 =4kg and N2 =13.2kg Prove law of conversation

If CO2 2.75Kg ,H2O=2.25Kg

Solution

We are given the following equation

CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O

According to the law of conservation of mass, mass can neither be created nor be destroyed. Thus, in a chemical reaction the total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of the products. We are given that 1kg of methane is reacting with 4kg of O2 to form 2.75kg of CO2 and 2.25kg of H2O. Thus

total mass of reactants = mass of CH4 + mass of O2 = (1 + 4) kg = 5 kg

total mass of products = mass of CO2 + mass of H2O = (2.75 + 2.25) kg = 5 kg

Hence, we see that in the above reaction mass of reactants = mass of products

i.e. law of conservation of mass is satisfied here.
