Solution

When methane is treated with chlorine gas in presence of sunlight (hγ), chloromethane is obtained. If chloromethane is treated with hydrofluoric acid (HF), fluoromethane will obtained.

CH₄ + Cl₂ + (hγ) → CH₃Cl + HCl

CH₃Cl + HF → CH₃F + HCl
