Supreme Court is an institution where disputes between citizens and the government are finally settled. Original Jurisdiction means that any court has the power to admit a fresh case for the first time. In case of Supreme Court, it means the same but the amount/stake involved is higher than that of the high courts.
Four cases which come under Original Jurisdiction of Supreme Court:
‘Indira Sawhney and others Vs Union of India case’-against the Mandal Commission.
Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority and Others v. Raghu Nath Gupta and Others (2012) 8 SCC 197 – the case filers wanted to know if they should legally be paying interests and penalties on delayed payments of instalments for commercial plots.
Vodafone International Holding (VIH) v. Union of India (UOI)- regarding tax imposed on off shore transactions.
Orissa Mining Corporation v Ministry of Environment and Forest- against the writ petition by the Apex courts.
