Question

Define the following modes of expressing the concentration of a solution. Which

of these modes are independent of temperature and why?(i) w/w (mass percentage) (v) x (mole fraction)(ii) V/V (volume percentage) (vi) M (Molarity)(iii) w/V (mass by volume percentage) (vii) m (Molality)(iv) ppm. (parts per million)EXPLAIN IN DETAIL.

Solution

(i) mass percentage (w/w) = mass of solutemass of solution x 100%(ii) Volume percentage(V/V) =volume of solutevolume of solution x 100%(iii) mass by volume percentage (m/V) =mass of soluteVolume of solution x 100%(iv) parts per million (ppm.) = number ofparts of a componenttotal number ofparts of all the components in the solution x 106(v) mole fraction = number of moles of a componenttotal number of moles of all the components(vi)Molarity (M) = number of moles of solutevolume of solution in litres(vii) Molality (m)=number of moles of solutemass of solvent in kilograms

Out of these, mass%, mole fraction, ppm and molality are independent of temperature because number of moles of a component and mass of solution or solvent doesnot change with temperature. Whereas, molarity is temperature dependent since volume is temperature dependent. The volume of most the substances increase with the increase in temperature. Hence, the quantities which are volume dependent depend on temperature also.
