Question

Describe Particulate Theory of Matter ?

Open in App
Solution

The particle theory of matter:

  • All matter is made up of small discrete particles.
  • The small discrete particles in matter are in constant and random motion.
  • Particles of matter have spaces between them. The particles of solids have less space between them, the particles of liquid have more space between them and the particles of gases have large space between them.
  • On heating these tiny particles move faster and undergo collisions, thereby increasing the space between them. On cooling, these particles move slowly and undergo fewer collisions, thereby decreasing the space between them.
  • The strong intermolecular forces acting between them hold up particles of matter.
