Question

describe following changes are brought about:

!)zinc oxide into metallic zinc

2)impure germanium into ultra pure germanium

3)Cast iron into wrought iron

Open in App
Solution

1) The zinc oxide is reduced by heating it with coke (carbon) which produces the metal vapor. The vapor is condensed to the liquid form and cooled to form the solid metal

ZnO(s) + C(s) → Zn(g) + CO(g).

2) Impure germanium is converted to ultra pure germanium by zone refining. The block of impure germanium is passed through induction heater. The heater is moved along the the length of the block. The metal keeps on melting as the heater moves. The impurities keep on moving with the heater whereas the pure metal is cooled at the left side of the heater.Utimately, the impurities move to the extreme right of the block. This end is discarded and we get ultra pure germanium.

3) Cast iron contains carbon as impurity. The molten cast iron is mixed with scrap iron and oxygen/air is blown on to the mixture. The oxygen reacts with carbon and other impurities forming oxides. The carbon forms carbon monoxide. Since this is a gas it removes itself from the iron and thus we get wrought iron.
