describe opium war and its consequences.
Reasons for Opium War:
a. In 1839, the Chinese Emperor in order to check the growing illegal opium trade, sent a special commissoner Lin-Ze-xu to Canton to check the opium trade.
b. Lin arrested men involved in the trade and confiscated opium in Canton.
c. He forced the factories to hand over their stocks of opium, and burnt crates of opium.
d. He also announced that Canton would be closed to foreign trade, thus, British declared a war on China leading to opium war ( 1837-42).
Consequences of Opium war:
i. China was forced to accept the humiliating terms of the subsequent treaties signed.
ii. It had to legalize the opium trade.
iii. It opened up China to foreign merchants. British also gained possession of Hong Kong and secured the British special rights in China along with most favored nation status.
