The State Legislature consists of the Governor and one or two Houses.Some states have two Houses i.e the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council and others have the Legislative Assembly only.

Some of the powers of the State Legislature includes.

1. To make laws on all matters included in the State List and the Concurrent List.

2.It controls the finance of a state.The annual budget is presented in the State Legislature.It finds out ways and means to meet the budget expenditure.

3.The council of ministers are collectively responsible to the State legislature.The Legislature exercises control over the ministers and supervises their policies and programmes.

4.The elected members of the Legislative Assembly form a part of the Electoral College which is formed for the election of the President of India.The Legislative Assembly also elects the representatives of the State to the Rajya Sabha.
