Question

Differentiate between evaporation and vapourisation.

Open in App
Solution

Vaporization is any process that describes the conversion of a liquid to a gas. (or phase transitions from a liquid phase to a gas phase).

Vaporization is a more general term and applies to both evaporation and boiling. We can say both evaporation and boiling as types of vaporization.

Boiling is a more particular process where a liquid goes to the vapour state at the temperature (called boiling point) where the vapour pressure is equal to the ambient pressure. In boiling, vaporization can occur anywhere within the body of the liquid, not just at the surface. It is called a bulk phenomenon because all particles inside liquid gains adequate energy to change into vapour state and this happens only at boiling point.

Evaporation happens only at the surface of a liquid and occurs at any temperature as long as the substance is a liquid at that temperature (between the melting point and the boiling point of that liquid). Evaporation is dependent on individual particles gaining enough energy to escape the surface of the liquid and become gas particles. However, we are aware that liquids evaporate faster at a higher temperature.
