Gender is a socially constructed term that sought to create artificial segregation in the society between men and women. It gets reflected in the sexual division of work and in the society’s mind set.It is this sexual division of work which distinguishes between the private and public sphere.
Private sphere- This is to be realm of women, who are engaged in household work, looking after the families, cooking, cleaning. But is not considered productive as it does not generate any value or income. It is undervalued. Society's mind set continues to hold only women are to look after the house. Even though, women are working outside but their work is not recognized.
Public sphere- This domain is to be dominated by men, since they are engaged in activities which generate value or income.
This prejudiced view got reflected in the politics where earlier women were not given political rights, were not allowed to vote or participate in the public affairs. We may have established Democracy formally that embraces the notion of liberty, equality and have granted equal set of civil and political rights, but there exist a sharp contrast between theory and practice. The participation of women continues to be low, as it is still not easily acceptable to the society.
