discuss briefly the three important food intervention programmes introduced by the Indian government

Government of India has started many programmes to ensure Food Security to all. Some of the important schemes are:

  1. Under the Public Distribution System, ration or fair price shops have been set up to provide food grains at subsidised rates to families that hold ration cards. People who hold the yellow card, below poverty line, get grains at further subsidised rates.
  2. Food-for-work, in drought and famine prone areas, the government has initiated food-for-work programme, by which people are ensured both empoloyment and food at the same time.
  3. In 2000, Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Annapurna Schemes wwere started with target groups of extremely poor population and senior citizens respectively.
