‘Special’ status is allotted to States under the Article 371 of Indian Constitution that have:

• harsh terrain,

• inadequate economic and social infrastructure,

• predominant tribal population

• lagging resource base.

The states Maharashtra, Goa, North eastern state, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh fall under this category, hence they are given special status.
