The phenomenon of bending of light around the corners of an opaque object which obstructs the path of light is called diffraction. Interesting patterns are observed when a monochromatic light is diffracted by a small slit.

Refraction is the bending of light when it travels from one medium to another. The bending occurs at the interface between the two different mediums.
