The most reactive metals like Na , K, Ca, Mg(alkali and alkaline earth metal) form Hydroxide with water release Hydrogen gas. Less reactive metals form oxide and release hydrogen when reacts with water.

Na + H2O→ NaOH + H2
K + H2O → KOH + H2
Ca + H2O → Ca(OH)2 + H2
Mg + H2O→ Mg(OH)2 + H2
Al + H2O→ Al2O3 + H2
Fe + H2O → Fe3O4 + H2
