Does a carbon atom can form four bonds with other carbon atom.If this is possible it must can only do bonding with one carbon atom and so there will be only one type of compound and then what is it's name and properties?

  • Carbon has 4 valency means it can form four bonds with other atoms to attain inert gas configuration. Due to its small size, it can form long chain organic compounds, ring compounds also. Carbon can form bond with any electronegative element.
  • Carbon can make bonds with other carbon atoms also, and this is termed as catenation. And due to this a large number of organic compounds are found in nature.
  • If carbon forms bond with one carbon atom, then compound formed will be 'Ethane'.

Formula : C2H6

Molecular Weight (lb/mol) : 30.07

Boiling Point (°F) : -127.5

Melting Point (°F) : -297.9

Chemical properties of ethane:

  • Ethane gives free radical substitution reactions.
