Question

Does osmosis occur through cell wall?

Open in App
Solution

The primary cell wall of the plants is semipermeable and small molecules and water can pass through it, so osmosis occurs through this wall. It is present in primary plant body and in all herbacious plants.
In some plants, secondary cell wall is formed inside the primary cell wall that becomes thick and its permeability also changes. Thus, there is negligible or reduced rate of osmosis through secondary cell wall. The movements of substances occurs through the channels in the cell walls called plasmodesmata.
