During lightining the clouds carry positive as well as negative charges, but why the negative charges accumulate at the bottom while the positive at the top portion of the cloud?
During charging of clouds the positive charges are acquired by lighter ice crystals and negative charges by heavier particles called graupels. These lighter ice crystal are swept away towards the top of the cloud leaving the heavier graupels at the bottom. This is why positive charges accumulate towards the top and negative charges are present at the bottom of the cloud.
