Question

State whether true or false.

A thin metallic spherical shell of the radius R and has a charge of 2q.A point charge q is placed at the centre of the shell .Another point charge (-q ) is placed outside the shell at a distance of 3R from the centre of the shell .The force on charge at centre due to charge - q is 0.

Solution

The force on the central charge would indeed be zero. This is because the charge at the center is shielded form the outside charge by the conducting charged shell, which acts like a Faraday cage.

So, the statement is true.
