Q=WHY WE CALL D BLOCK AS TRANSITION ELEMENTS AND THAT OF F BLOCK AS INNER TRANSITION ELEMENTS.

Q="The compounds are generally called paramagnetic in nature".What the word paramagnetic here means.?

Solution

d block elements are called as transition elements because they are placed in between the s and p block elements and have properties intermediate to that of the s and p block elements.

In case of transition elements last electron enters to the (n-1)d sub shell called penultimate energy shell. Electronic configuration of transition metal atom is ( n-1) d1-10ns1-2

In case of lanthanide last electron enters to the third to the outermost ( called antepenultimate) energy shell that is (n-2) f . lanthanides have electronic configuration (n-2) f1-14 (n-1)d0-1ns2.

Therefore these elements are also called as inner transition elements.

Paramagnetic is used for the unpaired electrons. The compound having unpaired electrons are called as paramagnetic compounds.
