Question

why do plasids and mitochondria have their on DNA and ribosomes ?

Open in App
Solution

It is because both plastid and mitochondria are believed to be the descendents of endosymbiotic prokaryotes. Mitochondria are thought to have originated as bacteria capable of carrying out oxidative metabolism and chloroplasts are believed to arose from photosynthetic bacteria. That is why these organelles contain circular DNA molecules similar to those found in prokaryotes.
