Mature pollen grain contains two cells:

• Vegetative cell − Large with irregular nucleus, contains food reserves

• Generative cell − Small and floats in the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell

Vegetative cell produces the pollen tube which then emerges from one of the pores in the wall of the pollen grains, and grows rapidly down the style to the ovary.
