There are lots of thing that changes during change of state as: change in temperature, kinetic energy, bond angle, bond length, intermolecular force of attraction etc.
When heat is applied to solid, the temperature remains unchanged till it converts into liquid, because the heat supplied is absorbed by the solid to break its intermolecular force of attraction and to melt to the liquid phase. The heat absorbed is called as latent heat of fusion.
