Specialized junctions called tight junctions are present in epithelial cells which check the flow of materials between the cells. Two types of tight junctions are present in epitheilal cells. These are gap junctions and adhering junctions. Plasma membranes in the apical part of the adjacent epithelial cells become tightly packed or are even fused to form the tight junctions.
