Question

Estimate the quantum number in argon 3d orbital and explain the quantu number ?

Open in App
Solution

The numbers which describes the position of electrons in different orbitals around the nucleus of an atom are called quantum numbers.
Principal quantum number (n) : It gives the main shell or energy level to which an electron belongs. The values n can be =1,2,3,4......
Azimuthal quantum number ( l ) : It gives the number of subshells present in the main shell. Its value = 0 to (n-1).

Magnetic quantum number (m) : It describes the type of orbitals in a particular subshell. Its value = -1 to +l
Spin quantum number (s) : It tells about the spin of the electron within an orbital. Its value = +1/2 or -1/2

Electronic configuration of Argon = 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6.
It doesnot have a 3d orbital.
