Quick lime : Calcium oxide (CaO) is known as quick lime. It is obtained by heating lime stone and it is a white, caustic and alkaline crystalline solid.

As; CaCO3 --> CaO + CO3

Use: It is used in blast furnace to remove silica , in manufacturing processes of steel , upgrading processes of sulphide ore. It is also used in making paper pulp,and cleaning drinking water and water wastes. Flue glass in coal-fired powder are also cleaned with quicklime.

Slacked lime : It is calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] which is formed by the action of water over quick lime as:

CaO + H2O -> Ca(OH)2]

Uses: It is used in cleaning drinking water and waste water as well as in the metallurgical and building industries.

It is also used in Mortar and Plaster to increase the rate of hardening and improving adhesion. It is used to reduce acidity of water. It is a refractory and dehydrating agent and so used to purify citric acid, glucose, dyes etc. and also used as CO2 absorber.
