Question

Explain breifly what are genes? how it is related with DNA and position of genes in DNA

Open in App
Solution

A gene is a functional unit of heredity, i.e. it is passed from the parents to the offsprings ensuring transfer of information from one generation to another.

Structurally a gene is a functional segment of DNA. It is a part of DNA containing a group of genetic codes ( sequence of 3 N- Bases that can code for an amino acid ) that can code of a polypeptide ( polymer of amino acid formed from the information of sequence of genetic codes ).

The gene sequence codes are decoded into a mRNA by the process of Transcription (DNA ------> RNA) . The information of RNA is used by ribosomes to polymerize the sequence of amino acids as deciphered by the genetic codes of gene ( part of DNA ) and form the polypeptide/ protein. The protein this formed performs the physiologic function .
