The British merchants like the Portuguese and the French, were attracted by he highly profitable trade of the Portuguese with India and the other countries. Sir Francis Drake's Voyage around e world in 1580 A. D. and the defeat of the Spanish Armada by the British in 1588 A.D., made England the foremost naval power in the world. It was at this stage they thought of establishing heir colonies in the East. A small group of merchants formed the British East India Company in 1600 A. D. ad got permission from their government to carry on trade with India.

The Company sent captain Hawkins in 1608 A. D and later Sir Thomas Roe in 1615 A.D. to the court of Jahangir to obtain trade concessions in India. He managed to get permission and started setting up factories for trade in India.
