Question

Explain Electrovalent compounds have a high melting point and boiling point while covalent compounds do not.

Open in App
Solution

Ions in an electrovalent compound exhibit strong forces of attraction between the ions and are bound to each other very firmly. As a result, electrovalent or ionic solids have high melting and boiling points as a large amount of energy is required to break the attractive forces.

Covalent compounds on the other hand are bound by weak forces of attraction which results in low melting and boiling points.
