Question

explain in details about the dissociation of a complex in water and other solvent? give examples to show how does it dissociates?

Solution

There are many complexes which tends to show dissociation in water specially coordination complexes.
One of the famous coordination complex known is

Reaction Involved -

[Co(NH3)6]Cl3 (s) H2O [Co(NH3)6]3+(aq.) + 3Cl-(aq.)

It undergoes dissociation as Lattice energy of the complex is compensated by Hydration enthalpy.

Some of the other solvent in which complexes may dissociate.
1. liq. Ammonia
2. liq. Sulphur dioxide

Sulphur dioxide used in pulping for the production of cellulose. During this process of complexation dissociation and association occurs.
