Some of the important terms related to Heredity and Evolution.
Variation: The differences in the characters or traits among individuals of a species.
Heredity: The transmission of characters from the parent to the offspring.
Inherited Trait: A particular genetically determined characteristic that distinguish a person.
Acquired Trait: A particular characteristic that is developed during the life time of an individual.
Genetic Drift: The elimination of genes of certain traits from the small population when a section of the species population dies of natural calamity or migrates to other region is called genetic drift.
Chromosomes: Long thread - like structures present in the nucleus of a cell which contain hereditary information of the cell.
Genes: The part of a chromosome, and made up of DNA. It controls the appearance of a set of hereditary characteristics.
DNA: A chemical in the chromosomes which carries the hereditary characters in a coded form from one generation to the next generation.
Molecular Phylogeny: It is the branch of science which is used to trace the changes in DNA backwards in time to find out where each change diverged from the other.
