Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs only in the reproductive cells. That is why it is termed as germ cell division.
In meiosis, the daughter cells will carry half the number of chromosomes (haploid – n) when compared to the genetic material of the parent cell (diploid -2n). Hence, meiosis is also known as reduction division.
It occurs during the formation of gametes in animals and spores in higher plants.
In meiosis, the nucleus divides twice and it has two stages. They are Meiosis I and Meiosis II.
