Question

explain stereochemical inert pair effect?

Open in App
Solution

In some octahedral complexes like BiI63-, BiCl63- etc, the lone pair does not participate in formation of complex. This reluctance of lone pair of Bi towards bonding is called stereochemical inert pair effect and the lone pair of Bi is known as streochemically inactive lone pair.
