Question

Explain stereoisomerism in detail. Encountered in characteristics of ionic compounds( that ionic compunds do not possess directional characteristic and hence do not show stereoisomerism).

Solution

The isomers which have same bond connectivity but different arrangement of groups or atoms in space are termed as stereoisomerism.

These are two further types of stereoisomers :

1.Geometrical isomerism.

2.Optical isomerism

Geometrical isomerism : The compounds having similar molecular formula but different arrangments of atoms or groups in space around the double bond are called as geometrical isomers and the phenomena is called as geometrical isomerism. This arisis due to restricted rotation of c-c bond.

Optical isomerism :

Those compounds which have same molecular formula and same physical and chemical properties but shows different behavior towards plane polarized light are called optical isomer and the phenomena is called optical isomerism.

Ionic compounds do not exhibit directional property due to which they do not show stereoisomerism. This factor can be explained on the basis of crystalline structure of ionic compound. The cystalline structure exhibit a force of attraction between the ions which is non-directional and extends in all directions. The structure is such that each ion is surrounded by oppositely charged ion and form a discrete structure and thus molecule do not able to show sterioisomerism.
