Explain the difference between diffusion and osmosis on the basis of membrane .
Osmosis | Diffusion |
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of lower solute concentration to higher through a semi permeable membrane. | It is the movement of particles in a solution from higher concentration area towards area of lower concentration. |
It occurs when the cell is placed in a medium with lower solute concentration. | It mostly occurs within gas molecules and liquid molecules. |
Water is necessary for movement. | Water is not necessary. |
Osmosis is the transportation of water. | Diffusion is the transportation of any solute like oxygen, carbon dioxide, salt etc. |
Osmosis is a slow process. | Diffusion is a quick process which occurs rapidly. |
Osmosis occurs over short distance. | Diffusion occurs over any distance. |
