Question

explain the different series of hydrogen spectrum.

Open in App
Solution

When an electric discharge is passed through hydrogen gas, the H2 molecules dissociate and the energetically excited
hydrogen atoms produced emit electromagnetic radiation of discrete frequencies. The hydrogen spectrum consists
of several series of lines named after their discoverers. The series are as follows:
Lyman series: The spectral lines in this series appear in the ultraviolet region of electromagnetic radiation. This series involves transitions from n = 2, 3, 4, 5 ---- to n = 1
Balmer series: The spectral lines in this series appear in the visible region of electromagnetic radiation. This series involves transitions from n = 3, 4, 5 ---- to n = 2
Paschen series: The spectral lines in this series appear in the infrared region of electromagnetic radiation. This series involves transitions from n = 4, 5,6 ---- to n = 3
Brackett series: The spectral lines in this series appear in the infrared region of electromagnetic radiation. This series involves transitions from n = 5, 6,7 ---- to n = 4
Pfund series: The spectral lines in this series appear in the infrared region of electromagnetic radiation. This series involves transitions from n = 6,7,8 ---- to n = 8
